If your car’s original colour is fading or if you’ve simply grown tired of its colour and want to try something new, getting a paint job is a way to accomplish this. However, a new coat of paint is not cheap and easy, like TV ads often lead people to believe.
Painting a car the right way takes time and money. There are several things you should know before making a final decision. Read on to see if this is something you should consider for your vehicle.
You Get What You Pay For
So Maaco is offering a $199 special? That’s just to get you in the door. $199 may cover the paint job, but not the sanding, priming and other prep work needed to complete the painting process. By the time it’s all said and done, expect it to cost $1,000 or more.
In fact, for quality work, expect to pay $1,000 or more. Custom paint jobs can exceed $4,000. It is rare to find a shop that will do a high-quality job for under $1,000.
Quality Work Takes Time
Be wary of shops that make money by painting cars in high volumes. It should take more than two days to paint your car properly. In fact, expect a week or longer. A decent shop will remove everything from the car – engine, seats, console and dash included – to make sure the job gets done right. In addition, there is extensive prep work involved from sanding and more. The wax and clear coat will need to be removed. Dents must be smoothed out. Contrary to what many people may believe, painting is much more than getting a spray gun and going at it.
Check out the Shop
Exhaust fans and overhead lighting are a must in any shop. Ask to inspect a newly painted car for any flaws. An employee should carefully inspect your car and not simply give you an estimate within five minutes. There should be some discussion as to what to expect.
